Matt Holbert is a Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI, CFII) based in North Central West Virginia. He currently serves as a full-time flight instructor at Fairmont State University, where he primarily teaches instrument and commercial students in a Part 141 training environment. With over 900 hours of pilot-in-command time and extensive dual instruction given, Matt has developed a strong foundation in aeronautical decision-making, risk management, and student mentorship.
Matt’s aviation journey began with a transition from mechanical engineering at West Virginia University to the Professional Flight program at Fairmont State, where he found his passion for both flying and teaching. He later went on to serve as President of Alpha Eta Rho, a professional aviation fraternity, where he focused on leadership development and community building among aspiring aviators.
Through his instructional experience, Matt has trained and endorsed numerous students for FAA practical tests, with a strong first-time pass rate. His work requires adaptability, clear communication, and sound judgment—skills he is eager to apply in mission-driven aviation operations.
Matt is pursuing opportunities to expand his flying beyond the training environment and into meaningful, real-world applications of aviation. He is particularly drawn to conservation flying and environmental advocacy, and is excited about the opportunity to support SouthWings’ mission of protecting natural resources through aerial storytelling and public engagement.
